IoPP’s Pack Expo conference lineup packed with experts and insights
Save the dates! IoPP’s Packaging Learning Center returns to Pack Expo this fall at McCormick Place in Chicago. IoPP’s 23 presentations and nearly 40 speakers, providing education on a variety of packaging topics, will be a major component of the Conference at Pack Expo, Oct. 29-31. The Pack Expo trade show floor will be open Oct. 28-31. This is the third consecutive year that IoPP conference sessions will be part of Pack Expo, which is produced by PMMI. The IoPP sessions will cover trends and innovation, manufacturing solutions, pharmaceutical and medical device packaging, transportation and logistics, and food product/packaging safety. Speakers will include packaging experts from Néstle, GlaxoSmithKline, Estée Lauder, General Mills, Revlon, Bayer Consumer Care and ConAgra Foods. IoPP also will offer four panel discussions. These will include a special Spotlight Session featuring packaging professionals from InsightFarm, Kimberly-Clark, Kraft Foods and Avery Office and Consumer Products. They will discuss the results of a groundbreaking study on arm amputees, how the results reflect Americans’ tendency for one-handed multitasking and what that could mean for package development.

Next IoPP webinar addresses sustainability and package design
Many companies focus mostly on material choices when thinking about packaging and sustainability, but space utilization often can strongly affect the environmental impact as well. A more holistic approach to truly successful sustainable packaging will be discussed in an upcoming IoPP webinar, “Sustainability: Step 1 = Better Package Design.” Taking place September 11 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. CST, the presentation, delivered by Kevin Howard, Senior Packaging Consultant, Packnomics LLC, will focus on how to attain the highest density of products in fixed amounts of space. Also find out where and how a package design process is flawed if it follows the old six-step process, in which more packaging is added to survive a laboratory test that probably doesn’t really reflect the types of hazards the package must actually survive.

IoPP Professional Perspective focused in-house package development vs. using vendors
The September edition of IoPP's Packaging World Professional Perspective, addresses in-house package development versus using a vendor for such services. The article, titled "Should package development be done in-house or with vendor help?" and written by George Hill, Senior Research Principal-Packaging R&D, The Scotts Company, looks at the many decisions involved in a successful packaging project. These decisions, however, raise an important question about vendors: if you’re on the design team at a consumer products company, is it smarter to use external companies, or should your internal staff attempt to go it alone?
