Packaging and ergonomics go hand-in-hand
Packaging World
Ergonomics aims to make the design of things (i.e. work stations and products) compatible with human limitations. It's not that packaging professionals don't know that ergonomics should be applied to packaging; rather, not all know the depths and variety that the application can take. To correct that situation, packaging professions need a broad perspective, one that regards ergonomics and packaging as an organic pair and grants it front-of-the-mind awareness.

Packaging: Don't keep it under wraps
Light Reading
Packaging doesn't sound like it's a subject that would set the world alight, but talk to individuals such as John Pokinko, and you hear a different story. Pokinko is the vice president of design engineering at the Optical and Microelectronic division of global hardware design and manufacturing giant Sanmina, a company with quarterly revenues of about $1.5 billion. We met him at the recent OFC event in San Francisco, where the conversation very soon turned to importance of component packaging, prompting a more in-depth interview on the topic.

Marketing packaged produce bears fruit to tune of $4.8 billion
Houston Chronicle
NatureSweet's catchy new three-packs for its bite-size Cherriot tomatoes may cause sticker shock — they're selling for $2.98. At about a dozen per pack, that works out to about 8 cents per tomato. The patented packs are just one product in a produce packaging industry that's growing faster than produce production itself. The industry, valued at $4.8 billion in 2012, is projected to increase 3.3 percent a year to $5.7 billion in 2017.

Holistic packaging by design
Packaging Europe
The concept of "holistic packaging by design," which has been trademarked by HAVI and implemented through HAVI subsidiary Boxer, is a methodology designed to result in more successful packaging design. "The concept of holistic packaging by design means achieving a balance between brand identity, design, business and technical elements," explains Jocelyne Ehret. The various drivers in packaging development often have competing and conflicting requirements, which require some kind of mediation.

Creative Techniques makes smart packaging that saves companies money and helps the environment
Detroit Free Press
To get a sense of all the waste Creative Techniques keeps out of landfills, company chairman Mike Davis offers this image: Consider, he said, what it's like just after Christmas. Try to imagine the all the gift wrap, ribbon, boxes and other packaging that came with the family presents and that gets tossed. Now, imagine creating that pile 20 times or more a year. All that stuff — the paper, cardboard and packaging — represents what suppliers and manufacturers throw away, and it's what Creative Techniques is trying to help keep out of landfills.

Challenge to plain tobacco packaging is crucial test for trade rules
The Guardian
A landmark challenge to Australia's plain-packaging law for cigarettes and cigars at the WTO could have vast implications for how governments square the rules of trade with radical public health measures. The case against Australia has been spearheaded by cigar-producing nations Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Honduras, which say brandless packaging is an assault on their trading rights.
