IoPP hybrid training session starts July 28; focus is food and beverage packaging
IoPP
IoPP begins its Fundamentals Select hybrid training session for 10 weeks beginning July 28. The focus will be on food and beverage applications of basic packaging concepts. Here's how Fundamentals Select works: First, you register for the complete Fundamentals online course and finish your lessons independently, according to a class schedule, at the rate of about four lessons per week. Second, you also sign up for a small study group that will meet online with an IoPP instructor once a week during the 10-week session to discuss the course material scheduled for that week. This training session enables you to do a "deep dive" on food and beverage packaging with the convenience of online training at your convenience and pace.

Register for the Fundamentals online course, then register for the study group.

150 attend IoPP educational seminars in New York
IoPP
Approximately 150 packaging professionals attended three seminars June 10 in New York City, hosted by IoPP through a partnership with UBM Canon. The seminars were held in conjunction with EastPack, HBA Global Expo and other co-located trade shows at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The seminars were held as part of a full day of IoPP events, which culminated with the annual AmeriStar Awards reception. One seminar highlight was a spirited interactive session in which General Mills Senior Packaging Engineer Elizabeth Nordstrum invited audience participation in opening several packaging and then discussed package-opening issues and potential solutions with the group.

Nominations open for PMMI Packaging Hall of Fame

PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the owner and producer of the PACK EXPO family of trade shows, is accepting nominations for the Packaging Hall of Fame Class of 2014. The deadline for nominations is July 15. The inductees will be celebrated during a reception on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Chicago, during PACK EXPO International and Pharma EXPO 2014 (McCormick Place, Chicago; Nov. 2–5). You can submit nominations online now.

The applications that are commercialized seem to have small and narrow markets. Films or sachets are available containing nisin, chitosan, grape seed extract, allyl isothiocyanate, rosemary oil and ethanol, but not all of these are meant for food applications. Of course the main obstacle is cost, but what affects cost is not only the raw material cost but also the cost for production.

UK leaders fund study on ways to increase laminated packaging recycling

Every year Beck's Beer rolls out its summer-long promotion where the brand commissions up-and-coming and established artists to create original artwork for its beer bottle labels. Over the course of 27 years, the popular campaign has celebrated the works of Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Yoko Ono, MIA and Kid Cudi. This year indie group Capital Cities and singer Aloe Blacc, as well as six other artists, will take over millions of Beck's beer bottle labels nationwide.

Amcor continues to lead Europe's plastics packaging industry
