IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar is Oct. 6-8
IoPP
Your package development team tweaks the shoulder slope on a bottle. Or, the team "finalizes" a package design and gets it to operations, only to make additional subsequent changes. These and other packaging scenarios all have implications for how well your package functions on the production line — or whether it can even function efficiently without going "back to the drawing board." IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar provides working knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully. At an introductory level, the class discusses common packaging machinery and costly "do-overs" that delay time to shelf and picks up tips to improve efficiency. Packaging Machinery: Basics is taking place at Frain Industries near Chicago.

The underappreciated world of food packaging
National Public Radio
Like it or not, plastic packaging has become an ingrained part of the food system. While it's clearly wasteful to buy salad, sandwiches and chips encased in plastic and then promptly throw that plastic away, we take for granted how it keeps so much of what we eat fresh and portable. And behind many of those packages that allow us to eat on the go or savor perishable cookies or fish imported from the other side of the globe is a whole lot of science and innovation.

Green plastic barrier packaging material and process advances
By Don Rosato
Modern innovations have made it possible to keep food fresh for a much longer time without changing the taste or aroma. While proven barrier materials extend product shelf life by impeding oxygen ingress into a package, oxygen scavengers "capture" oxygen within a sealed package to ensure that oxygen does not react with the food product. Nanotechnology is increasingly used to enhance packaging barrier properties. But let's start off by taking a closer look at recyclable plastic barrier material.

PEF will not oust PET for beverage bottles anytime soon
Packaging Digest
In early June, Avantium secured additional funding to complete its development and commercialization of polyethylene furanoate from plant-based, second-generation feedstock. Shortly after that news broke, the Container Recycling Institute asked in its newsletter: "Will Coke no longer use PET for its bottles?" It's a great question — with potential reverberations throughout the plastics packaging markets, and most specifically for the popular polyethylene terephthalate.

Packaging materials: Who 'owns' your co-pack supply chain?
Packaging World
Of the many decisions contract packaging suppliers must make, one of the most important in the life cycle of a contract is the ongoing and repeated purchase of packaging materials — from labels, films, containers and closures to corrugated cases and displays. There are a few primary arrangements the customer — that is, the co-packer's customer, such as a brand owner or manufacturer — can manage with their co-packers.
