Make better packaging decisions — gain a working knowledge of machinery
IoPP
Your package development team tweaks the shoulder slope on a bottle. Or, the team "finalizes" a package design and gets it to operations, only to make additional subsequent changes. These and other packaging scenarios all have implications for how well your package functions on the production line. IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar provides introductory working knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully. It’s coming up Oct. 6-8 at Frain Industries, which for nearly 10 years has provided IoPP with its conference center and access to its expansive shop floor for hands-on learning for this seminar.

Considered the most important global packaging award, the WorldStar is based on the judges' consensus that a pack is superior in its own right and better in its class, in execution, or innovation by comparison. The judges consider the following criteria: protection and preservation of contents; ease of handling, filling, opening and closing; adequacy of information; sales appeal; graphic design; quality of production; economy of material and cost reduction; environment; ingenuity of construction; and adaption to local conditions (production, materials, market).

Food and beverage packaging in the clear
Food Processing
Transparent packaging is at the top of the wish list for food and beverage companies that sell their products in bottles or jars, particularly those wishing to convey attributes like freshness, close-to-homemade flavor and premium quality. "A trend that we're seeing is a lot more transparency in packaging design to cue freshness [and] allow the consumers to see more of the product," says Lisa Baer, senior director of market innovation at Packaging Technology Integrated Solutions, a division of Havi Global Solutions, Downers Grove, Ill.

Emerging food-packaging barrier applications to watch
By Don Rosato
Barrier developments in food packaging are expected to greatly help reduce food waste to better feed a growing world population. Approximately 1.3 billion tons — or one-third of the food produced around the world each year — is lost or wasted on its way from the farm to the fork. With limited natural resources, it is more effective to reduce food losses than to increase global food production. Let's take a look at some examples of emerging plastic barrier-packaging applications.

Packaging to brand marketers and consumers: Can you hear me now?
Packaging Digest
The philosophical "if a tree falls in the forest..." question notwithstanding, sound can be very subjective. When your baby cries at night, you want to hear it. When someone else's baby cries on an airplane, no one wants to hear it. But when it comes to packaging, an audible snap, crackle, click or pop generally contributes positively to the overall user experience.

The Guardian
New technologies are being used to make edible packaging for food and drink. It could reduce what we send to landfill, but will it taste any good? Picture the scene. You're at a party, drinking a cocktail. Once you've sipped, you eat the glass. Sounds a little on the wild side, but this is the image Loliware wants us to play in our heads.

Equipment suppliers scrambling to meet snack food manufacturers' needs
Food Processing
Product differentiation often means a change in packaging, and that can be particularly challenging for snack-food manufacturers trying to strike a balance between throughput demands and optimal flexibility. Inventure Foods is a case in point. "Gentler product handling, faster changeovers and efficient sanitation by design" are factors that temper the need for higher throughput, suggested Brian Foster, former senior vice president of operations at the Phoenix-based company.
