AmeriStar winner Clorox Company featured in Packaging Digest
IoPP
With sustainable packaging as integral to design, the Clorox Company's Brita Pitcher Open-Sided Carton — this year's IoPP AmeriStar Sustainable Package award winner — consists of a carton tray and band containing a pitcher protected by shrink film. This open-sided design allows for significant material waste reduction from the previous packaging while eliminating the threat of damage by letting shoppers look at the actual pitcher without opening the carton. The end result is a package that shows off the pitcher design in a format that easily communicates the size, shape and features of the product. Packaging Digest caught up with Samuel J. Marino, CPP, packaging development scientist, Clorox, to find out more about this innovative packaging system.

Make better packaging decisions — gain a working knowledge of machinery
IoPP
Your package development team tweaks the shoulder slope on a bottle. Or, the team "finalizes" a package design and gets it to operations, only to make additional subsequent changes. These and other packaging scenarios all have implications for how well your package functions on the production line. IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar provides introductory working knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully. It’s coming up Oct. 6-8 at Frain Industries, which for nearly 10 years has provided IoPP with its conference center and access to its expansive shop floor for hands-on learning for this seminar.

5 futuristic food wrappers you don't have to throw away
Wired
For most people, the food-to-trash transfer happens several times before it's even time for dinner. Nixing that transfer entirely is the task at hand for Hannah Billqvist and Anna Glansén, who together are Swedish design group Tomorrow Machine. Right now, the duo have a few inventions that fall under two novel approaches to sustainable packaging: food wrappers that can change shape to double as a dish or bowl, and packaging that's meant to be composted or washed down the drain.
