At 61 percent market share, plastic packaging — such as bottles, jars, compacts and tubes — reigns as queen for cosmetics and other personal care products. Plastic will keep its crown for the foreseeable future, with an expected 12 percent growth by 2019. Bottles are the most commonly used container, accounting for 30 percent of the market and are expected to grow 28 percent through 2019.

Following the recent launch of the Certified Packaging Professional designation in Australasia the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) is pleased to advise that the inaugural recipient of the CPP designation is Pierre Pienaar. "As the inaugural recipient to attain the CPP designation in Australasia I am thrilled to be a part of the newly-formed partnership between the AIP and IoPP. To date, there are about 2,000 packaging professionals worldwide that have attained the CPP designation and I am really looking forward to seeing other packaging technologists across Australasia join the program," Mr. Pienaar, FAIP,CPP said.

Fundamentals of Packaging Technology classes begin in just two weeks in suburban Chicago. Semesters 1-2 will be June 15-19 and Semesters 3-4 are scheduled for July 27-31. IoPP is pleased to announce the recipients of the Institute's 2015 Education Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund was created to elevate packaging education by raising awareness of packaging as a career choice and is presented to exceptional students headed for careers in packaging. Five academic scholarships were awarded by IoPP as well as one awarded by the Contract Packaging Association. The 2015 recipients are as follows: Tori Motchan, Clemson — $5,000 IoPP/PepsiCo R&D Scholarship; William Chickering, University of Cincinnati — $2,500 IoPP Scholarship; Abigail Cocca, Rochester Institute of Technology — $2,500 IoPP Scholarship; Erika Violett, Clemson — $2,500 IoPP Scholarship; Audrey Wilson, Michigan State University — $2,500 IoPP Scholarship; and Kate Cox, Indiana State University — $2,500 Contract Packaging Association Scholarship (supported by IoPP).

On May 19, entrants of the WorldStar Awards gathered at IPACK-IMA for a large-scale packaging awards ceremony. The 2015 round of the WorldStars organized by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), brought in 264 entries from 37 countries. Judged in Colombo, Sri Lanka, there were 148 winners from 33 countries; 84 of those winners attended the ceremony to collect their awards. The Missouri Gateway Chapter of IoPP recently announced that Theresa Duricek has been inducted into the Pi Alpha Kappa Society, IoPP's Honorary Society, in recognition of her many years of service to the Chapter. Duricek has been active with the Gateway Chapter for years in active roles, including serving as Membership Chair and Program Chair. Duricek is Data Management Analyst at packaging developer and supplier of packaging TricorBraun, where she has been employed since 1995. TricorBraun is also an IoPP Benefactor.

A new survey shows that for the fourth consecutive year the recovery rate for old corrugated containers has hovered right around the 90 percent mark — that's 90 percent of the corrugated produced in the U.S. successfully recovered for recycling, leaving a smaller environmental impact on our planet than any other packaging material. Corrugated recovery has been rising steadily for decades — from 54 percent in 1993 to 89-91 percent in 2011-2014.

Big Tobacco is pushing back against Europe's effort to remove the marketing allure from smoking. Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco, two of the world's biggest tobacco companies, recently sued the British government over new rules, starting next May, that would require cigarettes to be sold in plain packages.

Taking this to heart, in 2007, Medea Inc. of Pleasanton, California, began working on patented technology for a vodka bottle with a programmable LED message band that lets consumers do just that. The bottle comes pre-programmed with six popular greetings and can be programmed with custom messages that can scroll across the band for up to 45 consecutive minutes, with 20 hours battery time.
