FSAP and IoPP announce publication of HACCP models for packaging materials
The Food Safety Alliance for Packaging (FSAP) and the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) recently announced the publication of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) models for packaging materials.
The HACCP models are available for download on the FSAP website at www.foodsafetyallianceforpackaging.com.
HACCP is defined as “a systematic approach to the identification, evaluation, and control of food safety hazards.” It is an internationally recognized system used to identify and control food safety hazards. It is a preventative approach to food safety developed in the early 1970s by the Pillsbury Company and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
According to FSAP, food safety starts at the packaging supplier and continues through consumption. The packaging HACCP models are a series of publications designed to assist producers of food packaging with the implementation and installation of a HACCP program. They are designed to provide guidance in the development of HACCP plans. The packaging HACCP models have been created by FSAP.
“We’re pleased that the HACCP models are readily available at the FSAP website,” says Wynn Wiksell, Chairman of FSAP and Senior Manager of Packaging QRO at General Mills. “The packaging HACCP models are intended to be used by companies supplying packaging components to food producers. They may be used by those packaging companies that are just beginning to implement HACCP and those wishing to evaluate their existing plan.”
FSAP has developed HACCP models for packaging materials in the categories of cartons, rigid plastics, cut and stack labels and composite cans. These models are currently available at www.foodsafetyallianceforpackaging.com and will also serve as the basis for education and training programs for stakeholders.
“The publication and ease of access of the HACCP models not only elevates food packaging safety awareness,” says Jane Chase CPP, Chair, IoPP, “but provides tools and training across the packaging supply chain. The availability of the HACCP models strengthens the missions of both FSAP and IoPP, providing a necessary and valuable educational component.”
The Food Safety Alliance for Packaging has been organized to make sure that members of the Packaging Community – both in materials and equipment – understand their place in our important mission. The FSAP has joined together Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), service providers, trade associations, and packaging material and equipment suppliers to create food safety awareness and provide HACCP training.
