Pactiv, local politicians oppose possible NYC foam packaging ban

How to grow packaging from cotton waste

A team of scientists with the Agricultural Research Service has developed agricultural waste blends that can be combined with fungi to literally grow custom packaging material. The biodegradable blends, developed by ARS engineer Greg Holt and his colleagues, are being used by industry partner Ecovative Design to create custom biodegradable packaging to protect computers and other products during shipping.

Merger planned for US and Dutch flexible packaging companies

Flexible packaging powerhouses Scholle Packaging Inc., of North Lake, Ill., and Innovative Packaging Network of the Netherlands are combining forces. Both companies plan to retain their identities but noted that the combined entity will provide a more diverse worldwide packaging operation with more than 2,000 employees. Terms were not announced.

Bioplastics demand to hit 6.2 million tons by 2017

Report: Lightweight packaging to boost US consumption of plastics

Americans will be using 32,850 million more rigid plastic and flexible packs in 2017 than they were in 2012, making these the fastest-growing segments in the U.S. packaging industry. According to the "Latest Trends and Key Issues in the U.S. Retail Packaging Market 2013" study by market research firm Canadean, the requirement for greater convenience and cost-effectiveness will drive the use of lightweight flexible and rigid plastic packaging with innovative pack shapes, closures and dispensers.
