IoPP AmeriStar winner ZIPZ Inc. featured on ABC's Shark Tank
IoPP
ZIPZ, a 2014 AmeriStar winner in the Beverages, Alcoholic category, was awarded $2.5 million funding on the Dec. 5 episode of the ABC series Shark Tank. The ZIPZ product is an easy-to-open wine glass made from PET resin allowing single serve consumption of wine. The wine glass shaped package includes a zippered outer shrink sleeve that provides easy access to the wine glass and helps to protect the product inside, a key factor when it comes to wine packaging. While show host shark Kevin O'Leary liked the product and appreciated the technology, he insisted the product was overpriced at $3 a glass/serving. However, he stated that he could get the ZIPZ branded wine into Costco but only if ZIPZ would agree to sell it at $1.49 per serving retail. And if ZIPZ agreed to that price point, O'Leary would pay $2.5 million for 10 percent equity with the opportunity to do the same deal again at any point in the future — basically buying a one-way bet that the brand will take off based on the fact that ZIPZ got into Costco.

Make better packaging decisions — gain a working knowledge of machinery
IoPP
Your package development team tweaks the shoulder slope on a bottle. Or, the team "finalizes" a package design and gets it to operations, only to make additional subsequent changes. These and other packaging scenarios all have implications for how well your package functions on the production line. IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar provides introductory working knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully. It's coming up March 16-18, 2015 at Frain Industries, which for nearly 10 years has provided IoPP with its conference center and access to its expansive shop floor for hands-on learning for this seminar.

Thinking outside the box: Unwrapping a massive packaging problem
The Guardian
As the holiday season approaches, more and more purchases are happening online. As a result, mail packing is a burgeoning sustainability concern. Aside from the plastic and cardboard wrapping the products come in, there are the boxes, the labeling and the paper wrapping or foam packing meant to protect what is nestled inside. It's not unusual to end up with far more packaging than stuff, and the sheer amount of waste that results is staggering.

Less corrugated to landfill as wax coating usage drops
Packaging World
A new study from the Corrugated Packaging Alliance shows that the corrugated industry continues to dramatically decrease its use of wax coatings. In 2013, the industry used 39 percent less wax than in 2002, when wax usage was first measured. The reduction brings the total waxed corrugated volume to just below 3 percent of total corrugated volume produced in 2013, compared to 5 percent of total volume in 2002.
