KFC's edible cookie cups probably won't end packaging waste

KFC recently announced it will serve coffee in edible cups in its U.K. stores. No, the news here isn't that the fried-chicken fast-food chain sells coffee (though coffee isn't sold at most U.S. locations), it's that KFC has partnered with food scientists to create edible cups made from biscuits, wrapped in sugar paper and lined with a layer of white chocolate, Metro UK reported.

Plastic bag and wrap recycling up 11 percent up in 2013
Packaging World
The recycling of postconsumer plastic film packaging surged 116 million pounds, or 11 percent, in 2013 to reach a reported 1.14 billion pounds, according to a national report released at the 2015 Plastics Recycling Conference. This marks the highest annual collection of plastic film — a category that includes product wraps, bags and commercial stretch film made primarily from polyethylene — for recycling, since the survey began in 2005.

Legislator proposes tougher packaging law for laundry detergent pods

U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier (D-California) is set to introduce the tougher laws surrounding the packaging of liquid laundry detergent pods after a child ended up in intensive care after biting into one of the packets. The Detergent Poisoning and Child Safety Act would direct the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission to require safer, child-resistant packaging for liquid detergent packets.

Healthcare will be major driver of plastic packaging

The global plastic packaging market — defined as bags, pouches, films, containers and envelopes made from plastic — was valued at $259.65 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $370.25 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 5.2 percent over the forecast period between 2014 and 2020. In terms of volume, the plastic packaging market was worth 78,400.2 kilo tons in 2013.
