The Circular Economy for Packaging: Introduction & Opportunities to Engage

Thursday, February 24, 2022
2:00PM - 3:00PM CST (3:00PM - 4:00PM EST)

Description

Join The Recycling Partnership, the nation’s leading nonprofit solving for circularity, for an introduction to the circular economy in the US for packaging and understand how companies, communities, and governments are critical action agents to achieve this transition. Hear about our work with the packaging value chain as we collaborate, make grants, and innovate to provide solutions for companies at all stages of their sustainability journeys. This presentation will include real-world examples of our on-the-ground action bringing the Pathway to Circularity to life through material coalitions, a free strategy development tool called Plastic IQ, and discover why your role as a packaging professional is crucial to embedding the principles of a circular economy into your work and company.

Presenter - Beth Schmitt, Sr. Director of Corporate Engagement

Beth brings more than 35 years of diverse packaging industry expertise and a broad perspective on how to drive change in the nation’s recycling system to The Recycling Partnership. Previously, she had a long career at global aluminum producer Alcoa, where she served as Global Manager of Sustainability, Director of North American Recycling Programs, Manager of Packaging Innovation, Commercial Director, and Marketing Communications Manager. While at Alcoa, Beth helped lead cross-industry collaborative efforts to drive systems solutions to U.S. recycling challenges—a process that ultimately contributed to the creation of The Partnership. She served as Board Chair as The Partnership model took shape during the time it was called The Curbside Value Partnership and also served on the board of the Southeast Recycling Development Council. Her combination of sustainability, sales, marketing, and packaging industry experience uniquely equip Beth to lead our Strategic Corporate Engagement team, tasked with meeting the strategic needs of a growing number of corporate partners and bringing more companies to the table.

Presenter - Adam Gendell, Director of Circular Ventures

Adam brings a collaborative, systems thinking approach to circular economy challenges, focusing on building bridges between stakeholder groups and translating macro trends into action. As part of the Circular Ventures team, Adam serves as point lead for the PET Recycling Coalition, an impact-driven initiative aimed broadening the circularity of PET and unlocking new sources of recycled content. Adam’s approach is grounded in an extensive understanding of sustainable material flows and life cycle thinking, having studied the international landscape of recycling policy and emerging recovery technologies at Eunomia Research & Consulting as well as bringing over a decade of experience working across the packaging and packaged goods value chain at the Sustainable Packaging Coalition. Adam has worked closely with multi-national corporations, NGOs, startups, government agencies, and academic institutions, gaining a deep appreciation for the value of diverse perspectives in addressing systemic challenges. At The Recycling Partnership, Adam works to bring it all together by guiding big steps towards a more resilient and sustainable materials economy.
