Fundamentals of Medical Device Packaging: Instructors

Lynne Barton is a thought leader in the medical device industry with more than 20 years of experience in medical packaging. Lynne has set a new standard for the innovation and success of medical device sealers at CeraTek, where she is the Sales Manager. She been a member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals since 2012, and is President, as well as the Programs and Events Committee Chair, of the New England Chapter.

Lynne recently received the IoPP 2021 Rising Leader Award and the IoPP Chapter Excellence Award. She is an active member of The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) where she supports and guides practices for healthcare technology and sterilization practices.

Jen Benolken, CPPL, is a Medical Device and Regulatory Package Engineering Specialist with DuPont Tyvek® Medical Packaging. Jennifer works with DuPont Tyvek®’s medical and pharmaceutical downstream customers. For the past 30 years, Jennifer has played an active role in the medical device packaging community through industry organizations, speaking engagements and by holding a variety of different roles in the value chain, including packaging, labeling and sterilization.

Currently Co-Chair and DuPont’s Primary Member for AAMI’s ST/WG7, Packaging Working Group, the US’s mirror group to ISO TC198/WG7, Jen also represents the U.S. as a delegate to the ISO Packaging Working Group. Additionally, Jen is the Sub-Committee Chairperson for ASTM F02.50, Package Design and Development. Jen has been a long-term member of the Institute of Packaging Professionals, currently serving on the National Board of Directors. She is Chairperson for IoPP’s Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee.

Arthur Castronovo is a packaging engineering professional who has more than 32 years’ experience working in research and development, operations and supply chain organizations. In addition to medical devices, he also has worked in the consumer products and personal care industries. His specialties include strategically developing, resourcing and leading packaging engineering and global labeling departments. His strengths include technical problem solving, change management, cross-functional collaboration, packaging development, labeling systems, validation and operations management.

Art holds a Bachelor of Science in Packaging degree from Michigan State University and is an IoPP Lifetime Certified Packaging Professional. Recognized for his knowledge and expertise, Art has presented at multiple medical device packaging forums and workshops. He has worked for companies including Illumina, Smiths Medical, Abbott (formerly St. Jude Medical), Mary Kay Cosmetics and The Estee Lauder Companies.

Jason Crosby is the General Manager of Plastic Ingenuity’s Healthcare Division. Jason is experienced in areas including product development, operations, business development, material science, quality and package engineering.

He focuses on utilizing technology to create solutions strategically targeted to solve customer and industry challenges. Jason has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and an MBA from the University of Wisconsin.

Dhuanne Dodrill is the CEO of PAXXUS, a global, vertically-integrated flexible healthcare packaging manufacturer. With more than 35 years of experience in the flexible packaging industry, Dhuanne has AST. She is the immediate past chair of ASTM’s Committee F02 on Primary Barrier Packaging, is the Chair of the Sterilization Packaging Manufacturers Council, serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Flexible Packaging Association and is one of the founding members of KiiP (Kilmer Innovations in Packaging)

She is active with the Sterile Barrier Association and IoPP’s Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee, and is on the Board of Directors of Summit Insurance. Dhuanne has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (with honors) from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Jan Gates has more than 35 years of experience in package engineering for foods, pharmaceuticals, detergents and medical devices with a BS in Food Science and MS in Packaging from Michigan State University. She operates Packwise Consulting. Her work includes individual contributions and leading teams for packaging material and systems design and development, and includes production optimization, validation, and minimal packaging for sustainability with cost reductions always in mind.

Over her career, Jan has worked for a variety of companies. Currently, she works with ASTM D10 and F02 committees for rigid/flexible packaging and environmental package testing. She also is a U.S. representative on various ISO TC 122 committee for packaging testing, labeling, and product shipment.

Dan Floyd is a registered microbiologist with the National Registry of Certified Microbiologist, American Society of Microbiology and an AAMI Certified Industrial Sterilization Specialist (CISS-EO) with more than 30 years of experience in sterilization sciences, medical device testing, packaging, industry regulations and consulting.

He was also a certified quality auditor with the American Society for Quality. His specialties include EO, radiation, dry heat, moist heat, VHP, ozone and liquid chemical sterilization testing as well as microbiology testing requirements of medical devices. Dan has validated sterilizers on-site or assisted in sterilization consulting and training in numerous countries.

Elon Goldbaum is Senior Director, Packaging Engineering, at Network Partners. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the medical device field, specializing in packaging engineering, labeling, quality, CAPA systems and implementation of UDI requirements. Elon also has had various roles with Baxter Healthcare, Edwards Lifesciences and Danaher. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging from Michigan State University.

Kent Henevor is Vice President of the Sealing Technologies group at SencorpWhite, where he has been employed since 1988. Kent has been SencorpWhite’s representative to the ASTM F02 committee since 1990 and has been a member of IoPP for many years.

Kent has expertise in both pouch and tray sealing technologies and has participated in SencorpWhite’s product development for more than three decades. 

Brandon Hoser is Sales Manager at Packworld USA. After earning an MBA, Brandon began his career centered around machine building and worked through several roles in automotive and industrial manufacturing until landing at Packworld USA in 2018.

Focused heavily on life science industries, Brandon is familiar with challenges medical device, pharmaceutical and bio-tech manufacturers face. As an IoPP member, Brandon looks forward to contributing to industry knowledge sharing among packaging professionals.

Zach Muscato is a Corporate Sustainability Champion at Plastic Ingenuity, where he leads the sustainability and circularity efforts for the custom thermoforming company, working with customers to design recyclable packages at a lower carbon footprint.

Zach holds two packaging patents and has a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and an MBA in Business Management, with a concentration in project management, from the Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University.

Sarah Rosenblum is the Senior Director of Sales and Marketing at Packaging Compliance Labs (PCL). Sarah serves as PCL’s ear to the industry with her involvement in many trade groups. 

She has co-led initiatives for Kilmer Innovations in Aseptic Presentation and worked to promote industry growth within the Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee (MDPTC) of the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) with the Rookie Outreach Program and serving as 2021 Communications Chair on the MDPTC Board.

Anna Thomas is Associate Manager of Packaging at SeaSpine, a spinal medical device company based out of Carlsbad, CA. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2017 with a degree in Packaging and a minor in Environmental and Sustainability Studies. Previously, she was a Packaging Engineer at NuVasive.

Over the course of the past 6 years, Anna has made it a priority to spend time working with purchasing, supply chain, distribution, sales, and nurses in the field to understand the “big picture” of how SeaSpine’s products get packaged and where sustainability can make an impact.

Sean Thompson is a Senior Sales Engineer at Packaging Compliance Labs (PCL). Sean has been responsible for package testing, equipment validation, packaging design, protocol authorship and more. 

He has led the PCL engineering team for industry involvement by participating in the IoPP Medical Device Package Technical Committee (MDPTC) and IoPP’s West Michigan Chapter. He currently is secretary on the board of the New England Chapter. Sean has a degree in packaging engineering from Michigan State University.

Charlie Webb, CPPL is the Founder and President of Van der Stahl Scientific. He hosts the podcast "SPOT Radio" (sterile packaging on track). Charlie earned his BS degree in Management at University of Redlands and completed the medical device development program at the Andersen graduate school of management at UCLA. Charlie is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. As a member of a scientific review board, he co-developed micro-surgical devices that broke away from conservative innovation models.

Charlie has been in sterile device packaging for 26 years and has been involved in numerous FDA and ISO audits as a regulatory adviser. He is a Certified Internal Auditor and Quality Manager for Van der Stähl Scientific’s ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratory accreditation.
