More money in 2015? Last year, 65 percent of those who participated in the 2014 IoPP Salary Survey said that they expected to earn more in 2014 than they did in 2013. Does this hold true for 2015? Packaging Digest article focused on women in packaging
IoPP
According to a recently published article in Packaging Digest, more women are rising to the highest levels of leadership within packaging departments, and the trend promises to change how the packaging industry does business. Says Jane Chase, CPP, Fellow, Chair, IoPP, who is featured in the article, "It may seem that packaging departments are still male dominated, but there continues to be a group of strong women that are just coming of age, and it won't be long before the balance shifts." Chase, who is senior director of packaging engineering at the Schwann Food Co., also emphasizes that women bring a "unique point of view regarding consumers' view of packaging."

IoPP-CPA survey uncovers important trends
IoPP
Providers and buyers of contract packaging services agree that over the next three years, multipacking, kitting and assembly services; pre-packaging services such as product blending and filling; and primary packaging involving direct product contact will be in high demand for contract packaging, according to an IoPP-Contract Packaging Association member survey during January. The survey was developed by Contract Packaging magazine. Furthermore, the survey indicates that consumer packaged goods companies will have strong demand for turnkey purchasing services from contract packagers, CPG companies are most likely to turn to contract packagers citing a lack of in-house packaging expertise/equipment and as a way to overcome short-term or seasonal capacity constraints, and that on both the service provider and buyer sides, there is an overwhelming preference for contract packagers offering services beyond packaging — i.e., contract manufacturing, distribution and logistics. The unscientific survey had 91 respondents; 54 packaging service providers and 37 CPG companies. Look for a more in-depth article in an upcoming issue of Contract Packaging magazine.

Make better packaging decisions — gain a working knowledge of machinery

Your package development team tweaks the shoulder slope on a bottle. Or, the team "finalizes" a package design and gets it to operations, only to make additional subsequent changes. These and other packaging scenarios all have implications for how well your package functions on the production line. IoPP's Packaging Machinery: Basics seminar provides introductory working knowledge to navigate these challenges successfully. It's coming up March 16-18 at Frain Industries, which for nearly 10 years has provided IoPP with its conference center and access to its expansive shop floor for hands-on learning for this seminar.

Food industry drags its heels on recyclable and compostable packaging
National Public Radio
Overall, Americans recycle at the lamentable rate of 34.5 percent and recycle plastic packaging at the even measlier rate of 14 percent. So the majority of that food packaging is ending up in landfills, or on the street as litter, where it may eventually get swept into the ocean. There, our wrappers and cans and cups become a much bigger problem — a direct threat to marine life that may ingest it and die.
